There are two unit plans listed below. The first, Microbes and Me, was implemented in the classroom in Spring 2014. It proved to be very interesting from multiple perspectives -firstly being able to study the more unseen world of microbes and changing perspectives about microbes as well as learning about how foods around the world are made using microbes. Secondly, from a teacher perspective, the time needed and involved in each of the classes of this unit was significant and adaptations definitely need to be made for the future.
The second, Food Systems, is a much smaller unit designed as an introductory unit to a year long science class using the theme of food. Food Systems is the first of multiple units modeled on the John Hopkins Teaching the Food System Curriculum. It is exciting and invigorating to review and re-design our entire 7th grade science curriculum but a large task. The revamping and remodeling of the curriculum is being done with direct thought of global competencies as well as the recent Next Generation Science Standards. The overriding question we wish to pursue in the new curriculum is "How do we feed the world?". This open ended question will allow us to tackle multiple and diverse science concepts, framing them in global perspectives while bringing in current science research.
